It was in India, long before our era, in the year 4000, that the history of spices began. For the first time, pepper was used to flavor rice with the sole aim of obtaining new flavours.
However, it was not until much later in Antiquity that a real interest in spices was born. According to the writings of Greek scholars, we know that spices come from the Asian continent (India and China), the Middle East (Arabia, Syria, Lebanon...) and North Africa (Ethiopia, Yemen, Egypt. ..).
Mention is also made of spices such as pepper, ginger, nard, cloves, cinnamon....
The spice trade is held by Arab merchants who transport them by caravan and by sea.
These Arab merchants supply the West by taking the Silk Road to reach its distant and exotic lands. This road started from Antioch, passed through Roman Syria, crossed Euphrates and then the Parthian Empire led to Samarkand and the Pamirs to arrive in China.
