It is interesting how the delta has evolved throughout history. Since the last ice age, the sea level has risen, submerging all karst areas along the river all the way to Hutovo blato (a wetland area near Metković). Gravel and sand carried by the river were deposited in the valley. As the sea receded in front of the river, swamps formed, while the river filled karst depressions rich in sediment, thus raising the soil level.
