Kunkeri Hudo Utsav: A Unique Tradition in Sindhudurg
In Sawantwadi’s Kunkeri village (Sindhudurg district, Konkan region, Maharashtra), the famous Hudo Utsav is celebrated every year as part of the Shimga (Holi) festival. This festival is marked by unique rituals and draws thousands of devotees not only from Sindhudurg but also from Mumbai, Thane, Ratnagiri, Goa, and Karnataka.
For the last two years, the festival could not be celebrated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in 2022, it returned in full grandeur with thousands of devotees participating.
The 100-foot \"Hudo\" Structure
The main attraction of the festival is the 100-foot-tall wooden structure called the \"Hudo\", made from teak wood. It was renovated in February 2012 and continues to stand as the centerpiece of the celebrations.
On the night of Phalgun Purnima (full moon), a sacred bonfire of mad tree wood is lit right next to the Hudo, accompanied by traditional dhol and tasha (drums and cymbals).
Another sacred Holi fire is lit at the temple of Shri Dev Ling, using mango wood.
Throughout the festival, villagers play traditional games accompanied by the instruments Daf and Ghumat, and the devotional songs sung during these games are called Jati.
