Groups of sea lions have many names depending on where they are; on land they are a colony, in water they are called a raft, during breeding seasons they are referred to as a rookery and when several females are in one male’s territory, they are called a harem. Sea lions get their name from their mane made of coarse long hair around the face. On an overnight sea expedition off the coast of Kamchatka, I got onto a lifeboat at Russkaya Bay to watch Steller Sea Lions from close quarters. It was an overcast day and I saw this harem on a rock. I decided to compose from a low angle and it was not the most conducive set up given the bobbing of the lifeboat in the turbulent sea. The mist covered mountain backdrop provided a unique opportunity to capture this out the world habitat with its denizens at the forefront.
