Indian Jezebel
Delias eucharis | Pieridae
Also called the Common Jezebel, this butterfly
is quite unusual. Unlike the norm, it has a colourless upperside and bright underside. It is plain white with black veins on the upperside. On its underside, it has bright yellow hindwings with brilliant five-sided red spots. The male and female are similar, though the black veins and markings are more pronounced in the female. The female lays eggs in batches of 10-20 on the underside of the leaves of the host plant. The eggs hatch together, the caterpillars eat their eggshells, and then move together to devour leaf after leaf. They even rest together with their heads in
one direction and, in the early instars, moult together. But, of course, their rate of development may differ and they only pupate when ready.
