1st of October was the season opener of Tadoba where the core gates were about to be opened after a 3 months break due to monsoon. The jungle was untouched for this period. Nobody knew what events have unfolded in this time and were eager to find out. If u had asked the tourists that came there, I bet everyone was interested in seeing the first family Maya and cubs and whether Matkasur was still around or we may see any new male who will be ruling the land. There were many questions in our mind that needed an answer. The answers were right inside the jungle.
With lot of excitement we entered the park. The air was fresh and we had a vibe that something was about to happen. We were scanning the park looking tor signs of a predator but couldn't find any. With our hopes high we moved forward. Right then we saw a gypsy coming from opposite direction when we crossed the panderpauni area. The moment they came near, our guide wanted to enquire about their findings but all our ears were on to them and to our delight they said, "Matka! Panchdhara mein." (Matkasur is at Panchdhara) This was all that we wanted to hear. Our first tiger of the season wss the king himself.
When we saw him, the old warrior has sustained many injuries through the monsoon and he did look battle scarred. But looks like he had successfully defended the territory this time and was in the process of reinforcing his dominance by marking his territory. He was busy prowling the territory which gave us some wonderful photo opportunities. At one point he was walking extremely close. I was using my new Nikon 500pf lens with which getting the entire tiger was no way. So I decided to make the most of the situation. I had always wanted an image of a tiger's face without crop and found this was the perfect opportunity to get my dream frame. Here I present the battled, bruised, yet undefeated portrait of the King, Matkasur.
