‘My name is Anowara. I am 14.
I am from Naisong Zawmadat in Mynamar. I used to work with my father at the seside. We fished for prawns and carp, I was happy with my parents, my brothers and sister before the war. We ate well. In the afternoon I could play with friends.
‘Two weeks ago, the military arrived in our village. They entered every house and rounded up all the young men. When they tried to run away they were shot in the back. Some people got away. I do not know where my parents are.
‘One of the Burmese soldiers took me behind my house, raped me and left me there. My older sister was taken by soldiers to the school room, where they also raped her and then killed her. They cut her right breast and stuck bamboo inside her. They killed her very painfully. Then they burned our house. I was the only one left.
‘Next day I escaped from the village with one other girl. We came to Bangladesh. We walked for four or five days in the hills almost without any food. Many of those who walked did so barefoot. Late night we came to Nakhaichori Bazar. I don’t know anyone here.
The owner of this house saw us sitting in the cold and wet, and brought us here. I want to go back to my home, my country. Myanmar needs peace. Who wants to be refugees? We are running from the military. Four or five hundred of them came. They shot us in the back, then they took young girls for gang-rape.’
