Ramesh 10 and her 4 years old sister are seen begging on the streets of Srinagar, Indian Administered Kashmir. It is estimated that more than 1000 non-local street children from India travel to Kashmir everyyear for begging purpose and their number are increasing day by day. Begging is an offense under the Act (Jammu and Kashmir Prevention of Beggary Act I960) and state is not preventing it since the ailing conflict is becoming severe every day.
It is estimated that at least 300,000 children across India are drugged, beaten and forced to beg every day, in what has become a multi million rupee industry controlled by human trafficking cartels, police and trafficking experts said.
