The queen conch (Aliger gigas, formerly Lobatus gigas or Strombus gigas) is one of the most emblematic gastropod mollusks of the Caribbean. For decades, it has been heavily overfished for its meat and for the trade of its shell, which has led to protective regulations across much of its natural range.
In this image, I chose to move beyond its iconic shell and focus on a rarely observed detail: its eyes. Raised on delicate stalks, they possess a subtle and expressive beauty that often goes unnoticed. Through this photograph, I seek to humanize its presence, inviting the viewer to establish an intimate connection with the species and to reflect on the fragility of marine life in the Caribbean.
