Koi fish, also known as Cyprinus Rubrofuscus, have numerous meanings in Chinese culture. Fish is commonly associated with abundance, from the idiom “年年有余” as “Fish” (鱼) is phonetically similar to 余. Some koi fish also have gold or red scales. Gold is a symbol of power, wealth, and prosperity, or 富, while red symbolizes happiness and joy. Most koi seen today are raised, but wild koi thrive in warm, shallow lakes and rivers, and travel upstream against the current. Legend has it that success in reaching the high ground would turn the golden koi into a dragon. Hence the koi is also a symbol of perseverance, determination, and resilience. I took this picture when I visited the Hong Kong Park in Central. The bright sunshine and the rhythmic motion brought out the beauty and rigor of the golden koi.
