The photograph portrays an individual of Hyloscirtus antioquia, popularly known as the Chocolate Frog of Antioquia, recorded in the Llanos de Cuivá, a rural district located in northern Antioquia. Its peculiar common name is attributed not only to its distinctly brown coloration, reminiscent of chocolate bars, but also to the fact that, when in a state of excitement or stress, it secretes a volatile substance through its skin that carries an aroma strikingly similar to dark chocolate.
This species is not easy to find. Its populations are currently undergoing a continuous decline due to multiple factors, such as deforestation and the transformation of its habitat, making every encounter a unique and hopeful event. And so, just as in this photograph, under the cloudy nights of Antioquia’s cloud forests, these charismatic frogs survive and persist, like candies displayed behind the glass of a shop window, except that their showcase is one of oaks and streams, an unusual chocolatier’s cabinet where a strange chocolate, a different kind of cacao, subtly resides.
