The long-bodied cellar spider (Pholcus phalangioides) is a spider in the family Arachnidae. It is also known as the skull spider because its cephalothorax resembles a human skull. Females are about 9 mm long, with males slightly smaller. Their legs are about 5 or 6 times their body length, and can reach 7 cm in females. The long-bodied cellar spider prefers to live on the ceilings of rooms, caves, basements, and garages. This species is considered beneficial in parts of the world because it kills and eats other spiders, especially dangerous species such as the redback and hobo spider. Peak breeding occurs between June and September. The female carries about 20 to 30 eggs in her tentacles. Young spiders are transparent and short-legged, and shed their skin about 5 or 6 times during their adulthood.
