In Mumbai’s sprawling markets, where the pulse of the city beats the strongest, there exists an entire workforce that remains largely unseen—except in fleeting moments of necessity. These are the hamals (porters), phoolwalas (flower sellers), thelawalas (cart pullers), and small-scale traders who sustain the relentless commerce of one of the world’s busiest cities. Through sweat, strength, and sheer resilience, they navigate the labyrinth of narrow alleys, crowded stalls, and unforgiving streets, performing work that is essential yet rarely acknowledged.
This series serves as a tribute to the invisible workforce that upholds Mumbai’s economy. The black-and-white treatment of the images strips away distractions, bringing the viewer’s focus to the raw intensity of their labour. These are the men who carry towering baskets on their heads, weaving through the dense crowds without hesitation; the artisans who sit cross-legged, stringing fragrant garlands with precision and patience; the traders who call out to passing customers, their voices often lost in the cacophony of the marketplace.
What is striking about these workers is the rhythm of their daily grind. They move with an efficiency honed by years of repetition, yet there are moments—brief, almost imperceptible—where exhaustion surfaces. In these moments, the relentless pace of the city slows just enough to allow a glimpse into lives shaped by endurance.
Yet, despite their significance, these figures are often overlooked. In a city that never stops, where wealth and poverty coexist in stark contrast, the lives of Mumbai’s labourers are easily eclipsed by the spectacle of progress. The glittering skyscrapers, luxury malls, and high-speed infrastructure projects tell one story of Mumbai—the one that makes headlines. But in the shadows of these developments, in the narrow lanes of Crawford Market, Dadar Flower Market, and the countless informal trading hubs, another narrative unfolds: one of survival, adaptation, and unwavering dedication.
This project seeks to bring that narrative to light. By capturing the grit, the grace, and the unspoken stories of Mumbai’s working-class men, these photographs invite viewers to pause—to acknowledge, even for a moment, the hands that shape the rhythm of the city.
