Mahataba Begum's son, Fayaz Ahmad Lone, disappeared in the custody of Indian army when he was picked up by the unit of Rashtriya Rifles-36 from his sister's home in Zalangam, Kokernag during a night raid on September 22, 2002. He was a mason by profession and had gone to sister's home to stay overnight along with his wife and three small kids. Fayaz was the resident of Gadol village of Kokernag in Islamabad district of Indian Adminstered Kashmir. "SHO Kokernag declined to register an FIR when my son was picked up by the army and it was after the intervention of the then SSP Islamabad (Anantnag) which forced the concerned police station to file the report. We went from pillar to post for getting the whereabouts of my son but till date there is no clue about him. I personally went to meet Mehbooba Mufti (PDP Leader) at her Srinagar residence where she turned me away asking as to why we filed an FIR in the case. I left her residence with tearful eyes, nobody helped us in tracing my son" says Mahtaba with choked voice and moist eyes.
