BRIEF HISTORY OF EYO
The Eyo festival is the foremost cultural display of Lagos State which was first staged on the 16th of September 1852. It is ceremoniously held for illustrious Lagosians who during their life time contributed to the economic and social advancement of the state. The origin of its first public display is rooted in folklore and legends. The play is thought to have been staged only on Agbadarigi (Badagry) market days by traders at Oke Ita, which was the Lagoon end of the present Glover Road of Ikoyi. The Eyo play was in the past staged in memory of a departed Oba of Lagos or the ascension of a new one. The festival was also staged to HONOUR VISITORS LIKE YOU TO LAGOS STATE IN NIGERIA.
THE EYO FRSTIVAL
Eyo is a cultural masquerades that invite the world over to Lagos State, the Eyo play, figuratively represents CLEANSING the land, the sweeping away of adversity and the ushering economic vitality and good HEALTH. The play always depicts the RICHNESS OF THE YORUBA CULTURE.
The public appearance of the festival begins with KO PA JEDE, which is the ceremonial public display of the OPAMBATA Stick in their hand as the ceremonial staff. All Eyo must hold in their hand the Opambata traditionally staff symbol and Eyo festival takes place on Sunday that precedes the event proper.
The Eyo festival offers Lagosian in particular and Nigeria in general the acknowledged as a major economic growth and development.
