The Valley of the Monks is situated in the heart of the Sierra Tarahumara mountain range in Mexico, named after the elongated rocks reminiscent of monks. The outer layer of these sedimentary rocks is made of limestone, which has been slowly eroded by the area's extreme climate, particularly rainwater and strong winds. I didn't have the opportunity to scout the place in the daytime, so I found this composition in the dark. The freezing temperatures made the photography even more difficult. The photos were taken about an hour before moonrise, with the foreground shot just a few minutes after moonrise, allowing the glow of the crescent moon to be visible on the right side of the image. For the final result, I created two panoramic shots of the sky, first without a filter, then with an H-alpha filter.
