A marshland is a wet land that provides a habitat for many plant and animal species.
It also improves water quality by acting as a sink to filter pollutants and sediments from the water that flows through them.
However, these days, we hardly find any marshlands in our surroundings.
There are a few remaining which are nowhere protected but are being polluted on each passing day.
One such marshland in our very own Pallikaranai located in Chennai, India.
Around 114 species of plants have been recorded here. The marsh is home to 164 species of birds, 10 species of mammals, 21 species of reptiles, 50 species of fishes, nine species of amphibians and mollusks, 5 species of crustaceans, and 7 species of butterflies which are all endangered now.
Reason being - About 300 acres of this fresh water marshland is now turned into a garbage dump yard of solid waste as seen in the pictures above (The big white patch)
With growing population and development of cities/country, generation of waste is equally increasing.
The Chennai city alone generates 3500 tonnes of gargbage on a daily basis and all that is being dumped in Pallikaranai.
The wet land which was suppose to act as a 'carbon sink' is now polluting the environment by emitting carbon dioxide and a whopping 8.4 gigatonnes of methane every year.
