Dalada Perahera – A Living Heritage of Sri Lanka
The Kandy Esala Perahera is a magnificent Buddhist cultural procession held annually in Kandy, Sri Lanka, in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. Organized by the Sri Dalada Maligawa, the Perahera brings together centuries-old traditions, religious devotion, music, dance, and ceremonial pageantry.
For a photographer, the Perahera is a powerful story of faith, tradition, movement, and light. The rhythmic drummers, traditional dancers, decorated elephants, torch bearers, and devotees create a constantly changing scene filled with colour and emotion.
Through photography, each moment can reveal a different story—from the quiet devotion of worshippers to the dramatic movement of dancers and the warm glow of traditional lamps. The contrast between darkness and ceremonial light, stillness and movement, and spirituality and celebration makes the Dalada Perahera a remarkable subject for capturing the living cultural heritage of Sri Lanka.
