This portrait captures an elderly fisherwoman in a coastal community, continuing the work that has been woven into her life for decades. Her weathered face, silver hair and gentle expression speak quietly of time, experience and resilience.
In the foreground, her hands work with a fishing net — an everyday object that becomes a visual metaphor for the many threads that hold a life together: livelihood, family, memory, tradition and responsibility.
For women in fishing communities, labour does not begin or end with the sea. While the men leave before sunrise to fish and return around sunset, the women sustain the life around that livelihood throughout the day — preparing food, caring for children, maintaining the household and undertaking work connected to fishing.
I wanted to portray this woman not through the language of hardship, but through dignity. Her wrinkles are not simply signs of age; they are a record of a life lived, while her hands represent the continuity of work and knowledge passed through generations.
The portrait becomes a quiet reflection on ageing, labour, cultural identity and the enduring strength of women whose stories often remain unseen.
