Dome of The Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaytbay Mosque and Mausoleum is a spectacular architectural masterpiece located in the Northern Cemetery (City of the Dead) in Cairo. Built in the late 15th century (around 1474 AD) during the Mamluk Sultanate, this complex is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of late Mamluk architecture. It is so iconic that its image is featured on the Egyptian 1-pound banknote.
The complex includes a mosque, a madrasa (school), a mausoleum, and a sabil-kuttab (public fountain and elementary school), showcasing incredibly detailed craftsmanship.
The Dome: The external stone dome is famous for its breathtaking, intricately carved geometric and floral patterns, representing a peak in Islamic architectural stone-carving.
The Minaret: It features an elegant, slender minaret with three tiers of detailed carvings, typical of the sophisticated Mamluk style.
Interior Elements: Inside, the mosque boasts beautiful inlaid marble floors, stunning stained-glass windows, and a beautifully carved wooden minbar (pulpit).
