Lake Maharloo, near Shiraz in southern Iran, is a pink-hued salt lake admired for its striking colors and abstract patterns. Yet these beautiful and abstract patterns are caused by the inflow of urban wastewater, and combined with prolonged drought and overuse of groundwater, human activity is turning this fragile ecosystem into a damaged, abstract landscape, threatening wildlife and local communities. The series documents Maharloo’s transformations and draws attention to the urgent water and environmental crisis.
