Ryan Viviers sprints out as he wins the 1600meters swim at the World Ocean Swim event held at Durban Beach Club. This event, in celebration of World Oceans Day, will be observed globally today, June 8, 2025. The annual event also functions as a fundraiser for Breathe Conservation, with proceeds supporting environmental education programs. The funds raised in 2024 enabled Breathe to hire Jama Mbulwana, a certified marine guide, to educate over 1000 grade 6 students full-time this year on marine ecology. Sponsoring a booklet for these students costs just R40 per learner. The world\\\'s oceans are vital for life on Earth, often referred to as \\\"the lungs of our planet” by the UN. They supply most of the oxygen we breathe, a significant source of food and medicine, and are a crucial component of the biosphere. In recent years, threats from pollution, overfishing, and other forms of exploitation have increased significantly. Photo: SANDILE NDLOVU.
