Description
These images depict the Theyyam ritual art form performed during the Kandanar Kelan festival on the Malabar Coast of Kerala, India. Photographers are drawn to the high contrast between the bright flames and the dark night sky, which highlights the intricate details of the performers' elaborate costumes and masks. The shots vary from close-ups of individual dancers to wider views showing the interaction with fire and surrounding participants. This collection is united by the visual motif of traditional Hindu deities being worshipped through dance amidst active fire.
